How will Bingaman decide on Lieberman? New Mexico’s soon-to-be senior senator isn’t exactly saying

Senators will gather tomorrow to vote on the fate of U.S. Sen. Joe Lieberman. Lieberman was formerly a Democrat but was defeated in the 2006 Democratic Senate primary in Connecticut. He won re-election after deciding to run, and winning, as an Independent that year.

Despite this, Lieberman still has a chairmanship on the Homeland Security Committee because he caucuses with the Democrats. But after campaigning actively for Republican presidential nominee John McCain instead of the Democratic nominee, Barack Obama, many Democrats said it is time for Lieberman to give up his chairmanship of the committee. On Tuesday, senators will vote on whether to oust Lieberman.

So how will Jeff Bingaman vote? Well, according to the response some constituents got from Bingaman, we have no idea. From Daily Kos:

Sincerely,

JEFF BINGAMAN
United States Senator

That is the response e-mail that at least three people received from Bingaman as of Saturday. So far, three senators — Tom Carper of Delaware, and Bernie Sanders and Patrick Leahy both of Vermont — said Lieberman needs to face consequences for his actions. Other senators — including Sen. Ken Salazar of Colorado — are working on behalf of Lieberman to keep his position.

Sanders, however, will not be able to vote on Lieberman’s fate because he is an Independent who caucuses with the Democrats. This also means that Lieberman won’t get to vote on the matter either.
