Green surprises Democrat in race

Leave it to a Green to surprise the Democrats.

Just when you thought it’d be a cakewalk for Democrat Jerome Block Jr. in the Public Regulation Commission seat in Northern New Mexico, Green party member Rick Lass filed for candidacy.

According to the Associated Press:

Lass filed paperwork with the secretary of state on Wednesday saying he intends to use public financing for the race. He must collect about 1,400 signatures during the next couple of weeks to secure his spot on the Nov. 4 general election ballot. The day for minor party candidates to file for the general election is June 24.

Block won the Democratic nomination for the PRC District 3 seat. There is no Republican on the ballot..

Lass is a known political figure in Santa Fe. He has run against – and lost — to longtime state Rep. Luciano "Lucky" Varela, D-Santa Fe.
