TODAY’S TOP STORIES: Elephant sex! (Yes, it’s a slow news day, folks)

In national news, Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens appears to have lost his race to Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich late yesterday, Hillary Clinton may not accept the secretary of state job if offered, and in economic news, energy prices have fallen dramatically over the last month (8.6 percent), while food prices rose by almost as much. As The Washington Post points out, we’re looking at a period of deflation here. Meanwhile, America’s first black president seems ready to appoint the country’s first black attorney general, former Clinton administration official Eric Holder.

In local news, well, it’s a bit of a slow news day in New Mexico. The top story on the Santa Fe New Mexican’s Web site is about elementary kids’ chess league; on the cover of the Albuquerque Journal: a local church has to buy biscochitos (rather than use homemade) for its festival. From Las Cruces we have the shocking news that a man was arrested after trying to cross the U.S.-Mexico border with some pot. (No, really!) And, as the Clovis News Journal reports,The Girls Gone Wild bus stopped in Portales last night. (I am not making this stuff up.) My favorite story of the day: Elephants at the Albuquerque zoo are so busy gettin’ busy that they need new cribz, but the zoo moved so quickly to separate randy teenage male elephants that it forgot to get the necessary permits. Oops! KRQE has the story: Lusty Pachyderms Trip Zoo Construction. (Thanks, Somegye!)

But there are some things to chatter about. Albuquerque Mayor Martin Chavez delivered his annual State of the City address last night and we’ll have more on that later today.

Also, I almost wrecked my bicycle last night as I pedaled past a gas station advertising regular unleaded for $1.98. John Fleck has a little analysis of dropping gas prices (and a nifty chart) here.

In sad news, Chantal Foster, founder of Albuquerque’s best community blog, the Duke City Fix, announced yesterday that she would be retiring from blogging, leaving the site in the capable hands of Sophie Martin, who had a gem of a tidbit yesterday about a new recycling center that is expected to open Downtown early next year. We’ll miss you, Chantal, but we thank you for creating such an awesome site.

Well, at least their mascots get to have some fun.
