If the fairness Doctrine is going to be revived how about on college campuses? How about the main stream media when they clearly are leaning one way instead of fair and balanced?

Why do Liberals believe that everytime the "market' sorts out the problems, Fox News the most watched in the United States and Air America DONE, why then is it your job to change what people want? Why do you think you know so much more then the average American? Maybe they have spoken and they don't trust main stream media. Maybe they trust Fox News more then they do NBC or CBS, that is sad but seems to be true.

Maybe instead of going after "talk radio hosts" we should be looking at making sure students have access to all ideas instead of just dominating our campuses with Liberal thoughts. Maybe we should make sure that all "main stream" media is fair and balanced before we go after those that can succeed in the free market. So if the "fairness doctrine" is coming back lets begin with the organizations my tax dollars are funding like schools and the "free airwaves" of main stream media.

While a good article, this is a strictly academic discussion. None of the players in Washington that could muster the firepower to get something like the Fairness Doctrine have the slightest interest in doing so. Remarks like Sen. Bingaman's do nothing but stoke the flames of the right-wing fires that claim they are under attack.

Organizations like Free Press have no interest in bringing it back. To quote my colleague Craig Aaron:

If you want more balance and variety on the airwaves, the fairness doctrine won't do it. It's a poorly designed, constitutionally dubious policy - one that failed to meet its arguably well-intentioned purpose the first time around. The old fairness doctrine was infrequently enforced and easy to avoid. ... The government simply shouldn't be in the speech-regulating business. Instead of bureaucrats deciding what constitutes balance, we need policies that encourage the expression of diverse points of view.

Revive the Fairness Doctrine? No. The issue is Who controls the media. "Fairness" will be guaranteed by access. Winning control of "white space" is a good first step. Let a million blogs bloom. Rush can have all the time he wants; we get ours too. Feels pretty good.

I think it would improve things if the major networks, not the cable shows, had to answer to the fairness doctrine. This where many people of limited means get their news and they often don't have access to the net or even cable news shows.
