It looks increasingly like Bill Richardson won’t get the spot as secretary of state as many thought might be possible. Hillary Clinton is reportedly going to take that job.
And the latest rumors are that Bill Richardson will be the Secretary of Commerce in the Barack Obama administration. Chris Cillizza of The Washington Post writes that Richardson has emerged as a “serious contender” for the head of the Department of Commerce according to a Democratic official.
The rumors of Richardson as the next head of the Commerce Department bring to a close a wild week in the transition of Obama from candidate to president. In the last seven days, a series of leading Cabinet picks have been revealed including Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano to Homeland Security, former South Dakota Sen. Tom Daschle to Health and Human Services, Eric Holder to Justice and, last, but certainly not least, Clinton to State.
National Public Radio is reporting that Richardson is “likely” to be the next Secretary of Commerce. NPR is also reporting that “New York Federal Reserve chief Timothy Geithner is Obama’s pick for Treasury Secretary.”
Michael Coleman of The Albuquerque Journal also thought that would be where Richardson would land in an Obama administration.
The mission of the Commerce Department, according to its Web site is “to foster, promote, and develop the foreign and domestic commerce.”
The Commerce Department includes the Bureau of the Census, the Patent and Trademark Office and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
