NBC/MSNBC News is reporting that President-elect Barack Obama will tap New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson as commerce secretary on Monday. Richardson’s name was mentioned in a rundown of individuals Obama is expected to name to fill top financial positions in his cabinet.

A call to Richardson spokesman Pahl Shipley was not immediately returned. Another spokesman, Gilbert Gallegos, would not comment Friday afternoon.

CNN, meanwhile, is reporting that Richardson is under serious consideration for the commerce secretary post, but is nursing serious disappointment at not being chosen as secretary of state. The New York Times is reporting that Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton has accepted that post.

The Albuquerque Journal’s Washington correspondent, Michael Coleman, wrote in a blog post Thursday that was ahead of the pack that he was hearing Richardson might get the commerce post.

Here is part of the NBC/MSNBC network story in which Richardson’s name pops up:

Barring last minute changes, the nominee for Treasury Secretary will be NY Fed President Tim Geithner — a career Treasury official under both Bob Rubin and Larry Summers — who actually had worked at the Treasury in three administrations under five Secretaries — going back to 1988.

Geithner has been a key player in the current economic crisis — helping Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson and his team manage the wall street bailout.

Former Treasury Secretary Summers — also considered for the post — might still play a major future role in the Obama administration, according to sources. Summers came under fire from women’s groups because of controversial comments he made about gender issues while President of Harvard, but sources say the decision to choose Geithner had more to do with Obama’s interest in “change” and getting someone new on the team.

Also expected Monday — an announcement that former U.N. Ambassador and Energy Secretary in the Clinton administration, New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson, will be Commerce Secretary.

The woman often mentioned as a top pick for the commerce post, Penny Pritzker, a Chicago businesswoman and close friend to Obama, withdrew her name earlier this week for consideration for the commerce post.

According to the U.S. Commerce Department, the agency’s mission is “to foster, promote, and develop the foreign and domestic commerce” of the country. That has evolved over the years ”to encompass broadly the responsibility to foster, serve, and promote the Nation’s economic development and technological advancement,” the agency’s website says.
