Marty Chavez, candidate for ____, says ‘Happy Thanksgiving’

By | 11.27.08 | 8:04 am

On a Web site paid for by “Marty Chavez for New Mexico,” Albuquerque Mayor Martin Chavez tells everyone “Happy Thanksgiving.”

MartyChavez.com is online with the message and an area set up to “Join Team Chavez.” What Team Chavez is rooting for is not immediately clear. But the last time we saw MartyChavez.com, the site was for Chavez’ short-lived U.S. Senate run. Chavez left the race shortly after entering it when it was clear that he would have a tough time beating now-Sen.-elect Tom Udall in a Democratic primary.

Also, MartyChavez.net redirects to the same site.

Joe Monahan yesterday implied that Chavez was going to be running for mayor again.

A mayoral aide now tells us money raised will be used to pay for the mayor’s holiday party and a mailing to a lengthy Christmas card list.

“The Marty Chavez for New Mexico” committee could also use some of that money for political purposes like polling. But the city’s public campaign finance law kicks in January 1 and it is very restrictive. The Chavez aide confirms that the mayor will take public financing if, as widely expected, he seeks re-election.

So who is wishing us a “Happy Thanksgiving”? Mayoral candidate Chavez? Gubernatorial candidate Chavez?

We will just have to wait and see.
