About half of Palomas — a border town of 7,000 in Mexico bordering Columbus, N.M. — is on the brink of starvation, according to a Las Cruces alternative weekly called the Grassroots Press. Apparently, the town has been devastated by the drug war currently raging along the border.

The Gallup Independent says that while the economy might be bleak other places, if you judge it by consumption — you know, “shopping” — Black Friday sales were on par with last year in Gallup.

An article in the Las Cruces Sun-News about a fellow who lined up outside Best Buy starting at 10:30 p.m. but still didn’t get a $345 laptop is a good description. This year there was a tragic death in Long Island when a stampeding crowd trampled a Walmart worker. While many in the press point fingers at the culture of consumption, some commentators say the media shares the blame for that kind of tragedy as Black Friday gets plenty of promotion in the press.

On the Obama-front, it looks like the President-Elect will be rolling out his national security team today. Hillary Clinton will be secretary of state, Robert Gates will retain his position as defense secretary, and James L. Jones will be national security adviser.

Here in New Mexico, we’re all wondering when Obama will announce Big Bill’s role as commerce secretary in his new cabinet. Is that a done deal? Or is Obama waiting to see how it all shakes out before settling on where Richardson goes?
