A local reporter radio reporter and blogger has been sent to jail.
Peter St. Cyr wrote about the situation on his blog, What’s the Word with Peter St. Cyr. “Just before Thanksgiving, and just in time for the holidays,” St. Cyr wrote, “a warrant was issued for my arrest.”
But don’t worry — it’s all for a good cause.
Now, I’ve been charged with aiding and abetting the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) with the intent of helping area residents living with muscular dystrophy. I’m asking for your help to bail out of jail. I’m locked-up and serving time for Jerry’s Kids, and I won’t be freed until I collect enough bail (donations) from my friends, associates and neighbors.
St. Cyr has set a goal of $1,600 “bail” to help release him from jail. The money will go to the MDA, and if you want to help out, you can do so online.
So far, St. Cyr has raised $200 of the $1,600 needed to be freed.
St. Cyr said in an e-mail to the Independent that he heard from Bernalillo County Sheriff Darren White.
“[White] told me he’s normally a lock ‘em up and throw away the keys guy,” St. Cyr wrote. “But he’s going to support the MDA’s program for kids by making a contribution to my bail money which goes for research and helping MDA kids go to summer camp.”
St. Cyr also gives some background and some reasons to donate to the MDA. From his blog post:
This year’s MDA Goodwill Ambassador is 12-year-old Aaron Armijo. He’s a 6th grade Roosevelt Middle School student, who loves math and sports. We both have a passion for Lobo sports, the NE Patriots, and pizza.
Aaron told me he hopes you help me get out of jail. He assures everyone that the MDA is a good cause. Aaron says with your donations helps him [go] to a (University of New Mexico Hospital) clinic every six months.
Not only will the tax-deductible donation go to helping with medical equipment and other necessities for those suffering from muscular dystrophy, the money will also “help MDA continue research into the cause and the possible cure of the 43 neuromuscular diseases they cover.
“Normally I report on people getting busted and being sent to jail, so being ‘locked up’ myself for the MDA is a new experience,” St. Cyr wrote in an e-mail. “Some people have indicated they’d like to see me stay in the ‘clink’ for a while (eating baloney sandwiches), but seriously if everyone donates between $5 bucks to $20 dollars we’ll raise some serious money for these kids and research.”
