Not just Detroit — auto jobs in every state including New Mexico

CNN has an interesting — and scary — map showing the wide net of jobs in the automotive industry. There are more 2 million, in every state, from Maine to Arizona, from Alaska to Hawaii.

Not surprisingly, Michigan leads the way with more than 240,000 jobs in either auto manufacturing, auto parts or auto sales.

New Mexico has a small share of auto-industry-related jobs. New Mexico ranks 38th, with just 8,763 jobs, and most of those (7,921) are in auto sales. The rest are auto parts jobs. These aren’t exactly high paying jobs, as the average pay is just $5,604 in wages.

No. 2 in the most amount of jobs is the country’s largest state (in population) — California. Meanwhile, the state that would be least effected, by raw numbers, is the country’s largest state in area — Alaska. I’d be willing to guess that Alaska leads in snowmobile-industry jobs, however.

The District of Columbia, however, has just 222 auto industry jobs. Much less than even Sarah Palin’s state.
