On Monday, Republican presidential candidate John McCain of Arizona will be in Albuquerque for a campaign stop. McCain’s Web site shows the Memorial Day event as the only one on the calendar for that day so far. McCain will be in Albuquerque "for a Memorial Day Event presented by the United Veterans Council of New Mexico." The event will be held at the New Mexico Veterans Memorial at 1100 Louisiana Blvd. SE, and the doors will open at 9:00 am.
Though McCain is already the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, the New Mexico Republican primary is not until June 3. New Mexico is also considered by many to be a key swing state.
On Tuesday, both Michelle Obama and President George W. Bush will be in Albuquerque to raise money.
Obama will be in town on behalf of her husband, Barack Obama, and will be joined by Gov. Bill Richardson at a fundraising luncheon. The luncheon will take place at Yanni’s Mediterranean Bar and Grill. To be a "host," one must donate $2,300, the maximum allowable by law. To be a co-host, it will only take $500.
After the luncheon at noon, there will be a general reception with Michelle Obama and Richardson at 12:45 p.m.
The details of the visit by President Bush are a bit murkier. Though neither the Darren White campaign nor the White House media affairs office would confirm the visit, The Associated Press obtained invitations to the event. Bush will be raising money for Republican congressional candidate Darren White and other GOP candidates in New Mexico, according to the invitation.
Tickets for the event are $1,000 or attendees can pay $5,000 to have their photos taken with the president, the invitation said.
Bush raised money for Sen. Pete Domenici, R-N.M., at a Los Ranchos de Albuquerque home in August.
