Lt. Gov. Diane Denish walked a fine line Wednesday between evincing the take-charge attitude of an incoming chief executive and the humility of a second-in-command.
Denish, during a news conference in Albuquerque made no bones about the fact that she soon would take over as governor. She named a transition team to advise her. And she spoke openly of the challenges ahead.
But when asked if there were areas in the $6 billion state budget she’d like to see exempt from cuts as the states responds to a budget shortfall, Denish demurred.
“Right now we have one governor. He is a darn good governor,” Denish said of Gov. Bill Richardson. “And when the time comes I’ll be ready to step in and take the lead and I’ll be talking about my priorities.”
A few moments later, Denish was asked if she had made headway in choosing her successor as lieutenant governor. Again, she deflected a question that delved for specifics.
“I will choose a lieutenant governor when I vacate the office,” she said.
