Lt. Gov. Diane Denish and Gov. Bill Richardson have been trying to find time for a one-on-one meeting, but it’s been difficult.
“He’s out of town this week,” Denish said of Richardson on Wednesday. “I have a meeting scheduled next week. We are trying to maybe have a meeting this Friday. It depends on his schedule.”
Richardson and Denish said last week that they would work closely together to ensure a smooth handover of power, including the governor’s office opening up its budget briefings to the lieutenant governor and her staff.
Richardson and Denish are involved in a historic transition -– a hand-off of power from a governor to lieutenant governor, the first one of its kind in more than 50 years, Denish said Wednesday.
The reason is Richardson’s imminent departure for Washington, D.C., where he will serve as President-elect Barack Obama’s commerce secretary, provided the U.S. Senate confirms him.
Denish has some time to read up on the job. Richardson has said he likely won’t resign until mid to late February, when his confirmation is expected.
Richardson did acknowledge last week that he would be splitting time between New Mexico and Washington over the next few months. He also had planned a few days to visit his mother in Mexico.
