New Mexico electors make it official — and cast their ballots for Obama

By | 12.16.08 | 7:25 am

No surprise here, of course. New Mexico’s five presidential electors have officially cast their ballots for Barack Obama.

The state’s five electoral votes — never really in doubt past 7 p.m. on Election Day — are now officially in Obama’s column after yesterday’s vote.

The five electors were state Democratic Party officers: Chairman Brian Colón, Vice Chairwoman Annadelle Sanchez, Treasurer Tom Buckner, Secretary Christy French and Secretary Alvin Warren of the state Department of Indian Affairs.

Notice a trend there? Not much chance of anyone defecting to, say, John McCain or Ron Paul.

More from the Associated Press article:

Colon said each of the five electors spoke about the historic significance of the occasion and the nation’s new leadership during the hourlong meeting.

On Jan. 20, everything will be completely official when Obama is sworn into office as president and takes over the White House for the Democrats after eight years of Republican control.

It was the day nationwide where the electors officially chose Obama as president. Of course, there still is one more formality before it is officially official that Obama is the winner:

Obama’s election will not be complete until Congress tallies the outcome of Monday’s Electoral College vote at a joint session scheduled for Jan. 6.

That is the same day the new members of Congress (including three new representatives plus another representative who moved to the U.S. Senate from New Mexico) are sworn in.
