Who's to blame? Everyone! There's plenty to go around. Call it scapegoating if you want, but the Journal bears a major share of the burden for the catastrophic failure of the Bush years, being, as it was, a shill for every wing nut idea to come down the pike (war with Iraq? Bully idea! That'll show 'em, and what could go wrong?!). We all understand your game, Art: stir up the blogosphere, and then come in at the end like a voice of reason. But you cannot erase history, and just because a new model for investigative journalism has yet to become manifest does not mean that one cannot lay blame where it belongs: on the MSM (which here in NM means the Journal and the local broadcast hacks), including, unfortunately, folks like yourself. If the old media is not dead, it's certainly dying, and that's a good thing, no matter how much you might wish it otherwise.

Albguy and babyfatt, are you losing perspective? In a world where broadcasting, narrow-casting and the Web dominate what passes for public discourse, blaming the little Albuquerque Journal for
the sad state of American politics doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Also, though I share your disdain for the Journal's politics, I worry about scapegoating - the practice of throwing one's own failures onto somebody else's back. When rightists and leftists both blame "the media" for all kinds of crimes, I begin to suspect that they're engaged in exactly that.Or, to put it another way, who is at fault if Journal readers believe what they read?
Arthur Alpert
PS Happy New Year!
Arthur Alpert

The Alb Journal deserves to die a well deserved death for it total committment the last 8 years to the most destructive period in American Politics since none of us can remember. There is no excuse for this head-up-the-ass total committment to the destructive fascist policies they supported without question. They continue it today by running the absolutely fascist rantings of Cal Thomas, who never saw a right-wing concept he didn't like. This is a by-far-democratic state (witness the results of the last election) and yet we have this bunch of idiots spewing their right-wing lies and ideology, Its time to just shut them down. I won't read, or even line my bird-cage with the filth they publish.

Th

The Journal has plenty of good reporters, and workers of all sorts. But it's difficult to have any sympathy for newspapers in general or the Journal in particular when they bear such enormous responsibility for three decades of radical right-wing politics (Reaganism) that culminated in our current disastrous administration. The Journal, along with scores of papers all over the country, not only used its editorial pages to push for Republicon policies, it also spun and shaped the news to its own nefarious wing-nut ends. The myth of the left wing media is based upon the supposition that since reporters tend to be liberal, then the media must be liberal. The truth is that the media promote the needs of its owners, not its workers. Glorification of the military, fetishization of the flag, the use of social issues (God, gays, guns) to divide the working class against itself, this has been the agenda of the Journal's editorial page, all leading ineluctably to Bush's wing-nut triumvirate of tragedy: war in Iraq; Katrina; and the collapse of our financial system. Witness the recent hagiography of Domenici (who never wasted an opportunity to funnel cash to the military-industrial complex, or his rich masters on Wall Street, while fighting against the interests of working people), or the Journal's endorsements--in the most important election of our lives--of John McCain and Darren White. I understand how many folks love to clip coupons and read the obituaries and the comics and the true crime, and how they would miss the Journal if it disappeared tomorrow. But the good parts of the Journal cannot be separated from its wing-nut editorial and op-ed pages, and every purchase of a copy of the Journal just goes to line the pockets of a family of plutocrats while also giving them one heck of a bully pulpit, which they use to oppress us. Personally, I will never again give them a penny. Never, ever buy the Journal.
