While some of Barack Obama’s choices for Cabinet-level positions have stoked criticism, his choice of Rick Warren to give the invocation at his inauguration is making more controversy than any of those picks. Gay rights activists are very angry at the choice of Warren, who supported Proposition 8 in California.
Markos Moulitsas quoted John Aravosis from AmericaBlog:
So we know being a gay-basher doesn’t disqualify you from a seat at the Obama table – in fact, it seems to be an outright qualification for proving Obama’s post-partisanship. If Obama prides himself on reaching out to all sides of every debate, then why is it that Obama has never sat down with, or promoted at his events, an avowed racist or anti-Semite?
But he also quotes John Cole from Balloon Juice.
You would think that folks would be ecstatic that they have a President-elect who, for the first time I can remember, is publicly, openly, and repeatedly stating that he supports equal rights for gays and lesbians and that the Christian right is wrong about these issues, but I guess screaming about a slap-in-the-face gets more page views.
Meanwhile, Democracy for New Mexico agrees with Kos and Aravosis rather than Cole. DFNM writes, “This isn’t the first time Obama has dissed GLBT citizens. Last summer gay groups complained, but were rebuffed by Obama, when an ‘ex-gay’ singer led Obama’s rallies in South Carolina.” See the blog for more posts.
The Santa Fe Reporter’s Swing State of Mind says goodbye. I wonder where they will be going?
And NewMexiKen, perhaps my favorite blogger in the state, links to the year in media errors and corrections. The correction of the year went to humorist Dave Barry.
In yesterday’s column about badminton, I misspelled the name of Guatemalan player Kevin Cordon. I apologize. In my defense, I want to note that in the same column I correctly spelled Prapawadee Jaroenrattanatarak, Poompat Sapkulchananart and Porntip Buranapraseatsuk. So by the time I got to Kevin Cordon, my fingers were exhausted.
How can you not love Dave Barry?
