Former New Mexico Senate President Pro Tem Richard Romero has formed an “exploratory committee” to raise funds for a possible run for mayor of Albuquerque. The Albuquerque Democrat, however, intends to run a publicly financed campaign.
He’ll have to collect thousands of small donations and signatures in order to receive the public funds, and he is kicking off the effort tomorrow, Jan. 1, according to an electronic endorsement and invitation sent by newly elected New Mexico Sen.-elect Eric Griego. The e-mail says:
Dear Friends and Supporters:
I am proud to join a growing list of community leaders and local elected officials in support of Richard Romero as he launches his exploratory bid for Albuquerque’s mayor.
Richard and I are both from Albuquerque’s Barelas neighborhood. He was my High School principal — and he’s also the former Senate Pro Tem.Clean ElectionsRichard will run as a publicly financed candidate — a system we both support as it limits the influence of money in campaigns and encourages candidates to spend more time with voters.
In the next few months, Richard must collect thousands of small dollar donations and signatures prior to receiving public funding.
