For those of you who didn’t turn on the computer, television, or radio, or who didn’t have friends texting you left and right, yesterday–the big news is that Gov. Bill Richardson withdrew his name as Commerce Secretary designate. He will no longer be going to Washington.
You can read about it here on NMI, where Trip Jennings was on it early yesterday, giving us commentary from House Speaker Ben Lujan, D-Nambe, who said it was a “blessing in disguise,” and from Senate President Pro Tem Tim Jennings, D-Roswell, who said Denish should be happy that the state’s budget gap won’t be dumped in her lap. Richardson spokesperson Gilbert Gallegos told Jennings the guv thought the investigation would have cleared him by now. And we also have speculation from political analysts about what this means for the state.
Looking around the blogosphere, I think our own Matt Reichbach may have been the first to publish it locally–over on his own personal blog (the wonders of being a twitter fan). I also highly recommend you keep an eye on Heath Haussamen’s blog as well as that of Barb Wold, who’s had some excellent analysis over at Democracy for New Mexico.
In addition to the commentary here at NMI, the Albuquerque Journal has some reaction to the news from New Mexico politicos.
As for the mainstream media, it’s everywhere. Speculation is rampant and we probably won’t have a good idea for some time to come what really happened during the past week to cause Richardson to step aside.
