The hiring of corrupt and incompetent state employees for political donations and who hire more corrupt and incompetent state employees down the line cannot in any way be considered ethical. Maybe that bigger picture is why Richardson was denied the cabinet post! If so, it's a mark in favor of an Obama administration.

I hate to have to be the person to say it, but getting preferential treatment because you donate is corrupt, just because this has been the culture of New Mexico politics for a long time doesn't make it ethical or legally acceptable.

New Mexico is a wonderful state with truely great people, and they deserve a better political system than one that doles out its resources principally because someone is scratching someone elses back. I think if this all results in the death of the "padron" system (unlikely) you all would be amazed at how much growth potential has been stolen from the people of new Mexico by this corupting climate of pay for preference.

babyfatt has it. There are dozens (some would say hundreds) of Richardson donaters who got a job in state govt. The sum total of all those donations well exceeds the CDR donations. Check all new state employees for the last 6 years and see how many donated to Richardson, then see what the odds are that is random. The Patron system is back and in full swing.

Pay to play in NM? Duh! Good article, and the answer of course is public financing of campaigns (a la City of Alb). Baby fatt has some familiarity with state government, and all you have to do to see the answer to the question "is there pay for play" is go to www.opensecrets.org and look up the donors to Big Bill's presidential run. Plug in the name of your favorite cabinet secretary or other exempt employee and see if they contributed and how much (one can only imagine that all these folks are just grateful that the maximum allowable contribution in a federal campaign is only $2300). Sounds like Big Bill's karma is about to come back an haunt him. One only hopes he minimizes the damage to stat government on the way out.

Yes great article. Does anyone else remember when Patricia Madrid made her statement about people giving cash for access to her office during one of her 2006 debates against Wilson? It is too bad we hav not done something about this behavior sooner.

Excellent analysis, marjorie. As you said, we need to get at the systemic problem here and nationally. Anyone who cares about this issue should actively support ethics and campaign finance reform bills in the Legislature this year. If not now, with this scandal brewing, when?
