Richardson rumors swirl while the Senate expresses surprise

The dots continue to be connected on Bill Richardson’s withdrawal from his nomination to be commerce secretary. This morning Michael Coleman and Dan Boyd at the Albuquerque Journal confirm what we had all heard: that the Senate — Democratic and Republican alike — wasn’t planning to give Richardson a hard time about the federal investigation into CDR Financial.

Apparently, Senate staffers were as surprised as anybody. They knew about the investigation but didn’t think it would be a big issue during the confirmation hearings, and a Republican committee staffer said the GOP committee members weren’t going to make the investigation a “focus.”

Plus Sen. Jeff Bingaman told Jeff Jones of the Journal he hadn’t heard “rumblings” about trouble from senators regarding Richardson, and said that while he isn’t on the Commerce Committee he would have heard if there was a problem. “I thought he would have strong support in his confirmation process, and obviously, I strongly support him,” Bingaman said.

If no one, not even senators and staff, saw this coming, one can’t help but wonder what’s up. Will something happen between now and next week, when confirmation hearings are expected to get under way?

The blogosphere, not to mention many inboxes, are rife — simply rife — with rumors of possibilities from “high level” sources and those “in the know.” For instance, this one by Jim Scarantino at the Libertarian-leaning New Mexico Liberty site. Scarantino relies on a single unnamed, uncorroborated source for his claims.

But the truth is, we don’t know. And we may not know for some time to come.
