It’s been widely expected — now its official. Albuquerque City Councilor Debbie O’Malley is running for mayor. The municipal election is set for October.
O’Malley represents Albuquerque’s District 2 and is currently serving her second term on the council.
She sent a small bio to me over email:
O’Malley is an Albuquerque native who grew up in the Old Town/Sawmill area. She raised her family here while building a successful career in community organizing and revitalization. She served as council president in 2007 and currently serves as chair of the Metropolitan Transportation Board and sits on the Executive Board of the Mid-Region Council of Governments.
And, in a prepared statement O’Malley said she wants to run because the city is “at a pivotal juncture” that needs a “bold new approach.”
O’Malley added, “Like many people around Albuquerque I see the city at a pivotal juncture. We can do things like we always have or we can bring a bold new approach to moving this city forward. I believe I can provide the new leadership we need during these challenging times.”
O’Malley will make a formal announcement regarding her candidacy this coming Sunday at 2:30pm. Here are the details, from an email:
