Harry Teague, freshman representative from New Mexico’s 2nd Congressional District, received a spot on the Committee on Veterans’ Affairs. Teague is also serving on the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. Sen. Tom Udall served on the Veterans’ Affairs Committee from 1998 to 2006 while he worked in the House.

“I’m very proud to have earned a post on the Veterans Affairs Committee because we have a lot of work to do for our veterans,” Teague said in a statement. “New Mexico’s Second Congressional District is home to many veterans and military families, I am looking forward to representing their interests as we address their critical healthcare needs and the needs of returning veterans.”

New Mexico Department of Veterans’ Services Cabinet Secretary John M. Garcia congratulated Teague on his new assignment. Garcia said in the statement, “I look forward to working with congressman Teague to get our veterans the services they need. As we look at important issues such as providing our veterans proper healthcare, I have confidence that Congressman Harry Teague will be fighting for New Mexico’s veterans.”

There are nearly 200,000 veterans in New Mexico and the committee serves them by looking at current veterans’ programs and the current laws, and by reporting bills and amendments to strengthen existing laws concerning veterans and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). The committee also works on such issues as health care, disability compensation, GI bill education and job training, home loan guarantees, life insurance policies and a nationwide system of veterans’ cemeteries.
