New Mexico’s Martin Heinrich has been elected president. No, he’s not taking over for Barack Obama before Obama even officially gets into office; instead he has been elected the president of the Democratic freshman class in the U.S. House. There are 32 new Democratic members of the U.S. House.
According to a release from Heinrich’s staff, Heinrich “will facilitate class priorities and work to communicate best practices with fellow class members.” He will also serve as a liaison between the new Democratic members of Congress and the House leadership.
“I’m honored to have the confidence of my peers and I will work with them in the coming months to advance the agenda of change that our constituents voted for in November,” said Heinrich.
Heinrich will serve in the position for six months before another president of the freshman class is elected.
No word if this is anything like being elected homecoming king.
