Sabinoso Wilderness Bill moves forward

By | 01.14.09 | 11:51 pm

The omnibus Public Land Management Act, a bill sponsored by Democratic New Mexico Sen. Jeff Bingaman, cleared another hurdle on its way to being passed Wednesday. The omnibus bill, which is really a collection of 160 bills, includes several that would affect New Mexico, including the Sabinoso Wilderness Act. The bill passed cloture easily with a 68-24 vote, with six not voting.

The only Democrat to vote against cloture was Democratic Wisconsin Sen. Russ Feingold, while seventeen Republicans voted for cloture. The Senate previously voted to invoke cloture on the motion to proceed to consideration of the bill. Invoking cloture is one way to stop a filibuster. It takes 3/5 of the Senate to vote to invoke cloture, and it limits the time to consider the bill to 30 hours.
