It’s a symbolic end to a presidency when the outgoing president gets on the presidential helicopter — no longer called Marine One since he is no longer president — and flies to Andrews Air Force Base before going home.
Today when the chopper flew over the crowd, circled over Washington, D.C., for one last time, the crowd cheered. Chris Cillizza, a political blogger for The Washington Post, sent a message through Twitter that said the “biggest applause of the day” came when people were “waving at the helicopter carrying George W. Bush.” That may be a bit of hyperbole, as the cheers after Barack Obama took the oath of office were pretty loud.
Wonkette says people were singing a special song to commemorate the ending of a Bush presidency. The hit “Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye,” most often heard at the end of sporting events by fans of the winning team, was the pinnacle of the career of the one-hit wonder Steam.
Daily Kos says to George W. Bush, “I hope the door hits you on the way out.”
For some reason, I don’t think that Bush reads Daily Kos on a daily basis.
