Gov. Bill Richardson had been headed to Washington before a federal investigation stopped his departure.
In addressing the joint chambers of the Legislature on Tuesday, Richardson made a point to make a joke about that situation.
“Now I know there are some legislators who were looking forward to my departure.”
Laughter rippled across the crowd.
“And to having to deal with me this session. I’m sorry to disappoint, ” the governor said. “I’ll try to make it up to you somehow.”
Laughter again.
There definitely were some state lawmakers who were disappointed that Richardson was staying. The nod in his speech was a nice gentle warm up to the business at hand.
