Former Sen. Pete Domenici was quoted by Politico as “wandering the halls outside the Senate chamber” and expressed his sadness at no longer being senator to a group of reporters who were waiting for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.
“No one cares about me,” he was quoted as saying. “I’m a has been. I’m a used to be.”
But Domenici told Michael Coleman of the Albuquerque Journal it didn’t quite go down that way.
“I saw a bunch of reporters I knew, and I was friendly and joking,” Domenici said with a hint of “sheesh” in his voice. “I guess I shouldn’t have said anything and they wouldn’t have said anything. That’s all it was — but I can’t tell ‘em what to write.
“I’m really not sad about not being here anymore,” said Domenici, who served in the Senate 36 years.
It calls to mind, of course, the infamous pajama/hunting pants incident where Roll Call reported Domenici was seen wandering around the Senate chambers in plaid pants that some said were pajamas but Domenici claimed were hunting pants.
This led to what might be the greatest headline from the Washington, D.C., satire blog Wonkette: Capitol Threatened By Confused Old Man In Pajamas.
But what is Domenici up to now that he has been replaced by Tom Udall in the Senate, besides wandering the halls of the Senate? Coleman writes:
Domenici, 76, told me he’s preparing to start work part-time as a “senior fellow” at the Bipartisan Policy Center. Steve Bell, his longtime chief-of-staff, is also taking on a role at the Washington think tank. Former Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole hangs his hat there, as well.
Looks like Domenici will have no trouble landing on his feet. And, hmm … I wonder where in the Bipartisan Policy Center Domenici will work …
