John McCain’s car troubles

First Republican presidential candidate John McCain couldn’t say how many homes he and his beer heiress wife own. Now the Democratic National Committee is making a big fuss over a report that the McCains own 13 cars. OK, they’re rich. They’ve got eight homes and 13 cars. Big whoop.

But today CNN reports that although Cindy McCain drives a Lexus and daughter Meghan drives a Prius, McCain told a Detroit TV station, “I’ve bought American literally all my life.” Hmm. Did he mean, “I’ve bought only American” or “I have bought American and foreign” all my life or “I’ve bought American — but my family buys foreign”?

Well, none of it’s good. My next-door neighbors have about 13 cars, but since only one or two seems to run at any given time, I doubt that they’ll feel an affinity with McCain on this issue.

Meanwhile, Democratic nominee Barack Obama and his wife are a one-car family. Their ride? A Ford Escape hybrid.

Click here to listen to an excerpt of Obama supporter and United Auto Worker Union President Ron Gettelfinger as he accuses McCain of undermining auto workers.
