Alamogordo is a cultural hot spot this weekend as the White Sands Hot Air Balloon Invitational kicks off in tandem with the Tularosa Basin Wine and Music Fest, the Las Cruces Sun-News reports. The image of colorful balloons against the white gypsum sands is said to be spectacular, and after the balloon launches visitors can listen to music, drink wine and view arts and crafts.
In addition, the New Mexico Museum of Space History in Alamogordo will host a balloon viewing and breakfast from 6:30 to 9 a.m. Saturday and Sunday in the museum’s upper parking lot.
“The view of the Tularosa Basin is spectacular from our parking lot,” museum director Randall Hayes says on the museum’s Web site. “Add in nearly a hundred colorful hot air balloons launching from all over town and you’ll definitely have something to write home about.”
Unlike the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, the White Sands events has a unique rule: All balloons must come back to the ground if the wind starts blowing them toward the White Sands Missile Range, a military restricted area.
