Jim Williams of KUNM did a story today that gives non-reporters a glimpse into how difficult it is to nail down certain stories, particularly ones that involve campaign contributions and politicians.

Here’s a sample of Williams’ audio:

Imagine you’re a reporter. I know, I know, you’re no masochist. But humor me. You’re looking through contribution records, and you see that a California energy company gave 45-thousand dollars to Governor Bill Richardson’s campaigns from 2002 to 2004. Your interest is piqued: why would Sempra Energy, based in San Diego, care about a gubernatorial race in New Mexico? Well, you think, Richardson was energy secretary from 1998 to 2001, when those energy companies on the west coast and in Texas got themselves into some deep trouble. But that was then, you might say. So you dig a little. You request documents from the governor’s office, any e-mails related to Sempra.
