Udall, Bingaman vote ‘yes’ as stimulus bill moves forward in the U.S. Senate

No, it’s not quite done yet, but the economic stimulus bill is one step closer to passing the U.S. Senate.

Both New Mexico senators, Tom Udall and Jeff Bingaman, voted with the rest of the Democrats to invoke cloture and end debate on the bill on a 61-36 vote. The Senate is expected to vote on the bill itself sometime today.

Three Republicans joined a united Senate Democrat caucus, which included the ailing Ted Kennedy of Massachusetts, who made his first appearance in the Senate this year, to end debate on the bill. The three moderate Republicans were Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe of Maine and Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania.

A compromise that cut over $100 billion of spending from the bill was crafted in the past few days by moderate Senate Democrats and Republicans. The House already passed its own version of the economic stimulus bill on a strict party-line vote.

If the Senate bill passes, a joint House-Senate conference committee would reconcile the differences between the two bills.
