U.S. Senate passes stimulus bill

By | 02.10.09 | 1:12 pm

The U.S. Senate passed the stimulus bill a day after voting to invoke cloture. This time, the vote was 61-37, with Sen. Judd Gregg, R-N.H., not voting. Minnesota got only one vote, as former Sen. Norm Coleman’s lawsuit continues in a Minnesota judicial panel, keeping Democrat Al Franken out of office.

Both New Mexico senators, Democrats Tom Udall and Jeff Bingaman, voted for the bill.

The only difference from Monday’s vote was that Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, showed up to cast a “nay” vote. The same three Senate Republicans, Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins of Maine and Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania, voted for the bill, along with every Senate Democrat.

For the second day in a row, Sen. Ted Kennedy, D-Mass., showed up to cast his ballot. Monday’s vote on invoking cloture was his first vote of the year. Kennedy has been diagnosed with cancer and has largely stayed away from Washington.
