Fernando C. de Baca, a long time New Mexico and national Hispanic Republican leader and former Special Assistant to the White House 1974-76, makes an incredibly ignorant racist statement on Latinos not voting for Barack Obama because he is Black. According to a Associated Press report, he said:
"The truth is that Hispanics came here as conquerors," he said. "African-Americans came here as slaves. Hispanics consider themselves above blacks. They won't vote for a black president."

The referenced to "conquerors" is unfortunate because as history has shown this meant the death and destruction of thousands of indigenous people and their cultures throughout the Americas. His remarks places my family, which is part indigenous (Chickasaw) and my two grandchildren with African/Maya roots, in the middle of his bigoted way of thinking. When it comes to voting, his destructive beliefs would place my grandchildren in a real racial and un-American dilemma. Fortunately they have been taught to think of people in general and Americans in particular, as human beings who are to be respected, equal under the law and sacred in the eyes of our creator.

It is obvious to me and others that C de Baca has no clue of our history as to the impact of the African influence in the Americas. We don't need the "old" way of thinking about people to muddle the electoral process. Unfortunately racism exists in all communities, including the Latino community, for as shown by Fernando C de Baca's opinion, we still have much work to do internally to move forward as a nation. As Latinos and Chicanos now is not the time to sit quietly and let others respond, NO, we must stand up and denounce this type of racist behavior.

His weak attempt to clarify his statement raises more questions than the clarification itself. He says "he is distraught" by the reaction to his statement. I think he should be ashamed of his statement.

It appears he is not the Fernando C de Baca that I knew a long time ago, then again, perhaps I didn't really know him at all.

Gus Chavez
San Diego, CA

Many gains minorities in the USA have made were predicated upon the civil rights movement. People who are not aware of American history believe civil rights originated in the 1950's/1960's. The civil rights movement in the USA has been on-going since the post-Civil War/Reconstruciton Era.

No one minority group has been denied privileges under civil rights legislation, whether that group participated in the civil rights struggle or not. .

I reverse my previous comments about Mr C. de Baca. It appears his "quote" in the BBC article should not have been attributed to him. This misreporting is now being used by unscrupulous party members Weh, Domenici, Wilson, and White as a power grab for New Mexico's most populous county. They have been looking for a reason to oust C. de Baca for personal reasons, and now this BBC blogger has unwittingly given them their ammunition.

I believe his comments. There are more than a few New Mexicans that I have spoken to that are in their 20s that expressed the exact same sentiment. It's sad and it is an indictment of the failed education system in New Mexico that has not been able to provide its students with a comprehensive world view. Not being able to see what the world is and what our places in it are leads to the narrowness of thinking that is demonstrated by this full grown man who should know better. It also explains how people can be fooled into believing the misinformation that is spread by republicans.

Speaking merely as a puzzled citizen, I think Mr. de Baca's ideas about race need MUCH more examination. It seems as though the Bernalillo County GOP head is being unfairly railroaded by some hyper-sensitive, goody-two-shoes elements in his party.

If I may offer a modest proposal, I call on all GOP candidates in New Mexico to suspend their campaigns, don their sheets and join with Mr. de Baca for a week of TV-and-radio-covered discussion and debate focusing on these comments.

How else can the rest of the world be sure that the New Mexico GOP has dealt with Mr. de Baca's case fully and fairly?
