House passes repeal of the death penalty

The House passed the repeal of the death penalty minutes ago by a vote of 40-28. The vote followed an hours-long debate on the House floor.

The bill would end capital punishment in New Mexico and at the same time allow juries and judges to consider a life sentance with no chance of parole, an option that is not currently available under state law.

Now the legislation goes to the Senate.
