ABQ Mayor Martin Chávez signs papers to qualify for public financing

Albuquerque Mayor Martin Chávez is taking another step toward running for a third consecutive term. Dan McKay of the Albuquerque Journal is reporting that Chávez has filed paperwork to participate in public financing for the mayoral race.

Of course, the Chávez folks aren’t saying whether this means that Chávez will actually pull the trigger to run.

His supporters say he hasn’t made a final decision yet on whether to seek another term. On Tuesday, volunteers submitted a “declaration of intent” to the City Clerk’s Office. The document is signed by Chávez, allowing campaign workers to collect the thousands of $5 contributions needed to qualify for public campaign financing.

He didn’t go to the City Clerk’s Office himself — he signed the declaration of intent, then had volunteers submit it for him.

Richard Romero, earlier today, went a completely different route and held a rally to formally announce his candidacy.
