Embryonic stem cell research passes state Senate

The state Senate minutes ago passed by a vote of 27-14 legislation to allow embryonic stem-cell research. The opposition was bipartisan, with nine Republicans and five Democrats voting against the legislation.

According to a legislative report, the bill, sponsored by Sen. John Ryan, R-Albuquerque, permits “biomedical research on certain embryonic stem cells while at the same time attempting to prohibit human reproductive cloning.”

The legislation now goes on to the House of Representatives.
