The Albuquerque mayor’s race has picked up a Republican candidate — New Mexico Rep. Richard Berry.

Berry, who’s been in office for two years, is currently embroiled in the state’s legislative session, which ends March 21. But he says he’ll participate in the public financing system for the mayor’s race. In order to do that, he needs to turn in roughly 3,280 $5 contributions to the city clerk by March 31.

The election will be held on October 6.

In an interview with the Albuquerque Journal’s Dan McKay, Berry, a general contractor, said he’s not “coldblooded,” and described himself as “pragmatic” and “right of center but not extreme right-wing.”

Berry joins five others so far in seeking public financing to run for mayor. City Councilors Debbie O’Malley and Michael Cadigan, former state Senate President Pro Tem Richard Romero, all Democrats, and local community activist Donna Rowe, who told McKay she’s a Green, have announced they’ll seek public financing. Current Mayor Marty Chavez has not formally announced but he has signed a declaration of intent with the city clerk in order to begin accumulating the signatures and donations needed for public financing.
