jimmy-carter-photoThe effort to repeal the death penalty in New Mexico has gained some high-profile support. Former President Jimmy Carter and his wife, Rosalynn Carter, both support the attempt.

The former president sent a letter to Gov. Bill Richardson that said, “Rosalynn and I applaud New Mexico’s leadership regarding the death penalty and the rights of crime victims.”

Carter added, “The New Mexico Legislature’s House Bills 285, 211, and 284 advance the challenge of how best to address society’s most serious crimes.”

Carter won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 “for his decades of untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development.”

Richardson, in the past an opponent of repealing the death penalty, has recently “softened” his position on the issue.
