Well, it won’t help the weary, desperate creatures known as journalists, legislators and lobbyists who are frantically commuting between Albuquerque and Santa Fe during the legislative session, but the New Mexico Rail Runner Express should be fitted with wireless internet by the middle of this year.
Houston-based INX Inc, the company that installed WiFi on Albuquerque’s Rapid Ride busses and IP systems at Albuquerque Studios, announced today that it has received a $2.7 million contract from the New Mexico Department of Transportation to implement, manage and support the Rail Runner system.
According to a press release from INX, WiFi will be available free in all trains and all stations. The system will be able to handle as many as 1,000 Web surfers at the same time. It will also allow for the use of video surveillance equipment.
And for those of you who are so cynical and bitter that the mere words “contract” and “New Mexico” make you instantly curious, I’ll save you a bit of effort. The quickest search of the Federal Election Commission database shows that INX regional president Michael S. French of Tijeras did indeed give $2,300 to Richardson’s presidential campaign on Feb. 22, 2007.
Oh, and INX account manager Richard C. Vasquez also gave the maximum to Richardson’s presidential campaign on Nov. 1, 2007. Not that it means anything. Just putting it out there.
