Would-be sale doesn’t take flight — and Eclipse Aviation files for Chapter 7

By | 02.24.09 | 6:48 pm

It appears that Eclipse Aviation couldn’t complete its sale to a European company and has filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in federal court, KOAT-TV is reporting.

As KOAT reports:

Such a move usually leads to liquidation of a company’s assets but Eclipse spokesman Keith Spondike, who confirmed the filing, cautioned that the effort initiated by the company remains subject to a judge’s approval.

He said more information is expected Wednesday.

Gov. Bill Richardson in a news release encouraged the affected Eclipse employees to file for unemployment insurance benefits. According to the New Mexico Department of Workforce Solutions, more than half of those employees have already filed for benefits.

“While the future of Eclipse remains uncertain, it is increasingly clear that the affected employees need to take steps to access unemployment insurance benefits,” Richardson said in the release. “I encourage these employees to take advantage of all resource that are available to them.”

Eclipse furloughed about 800 employees last week, and hoped that they would return if the sale to European-based EclipseJet Aviation International Inc. went through. That didn’t happen.

According to the governor’s news release on Tuesday:

Affected Eclipse employees should call the Unemployment Insurance Call Center at (505) 841-4000, Monday – Friday from 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. or on Saturdays from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. to apply for unemployment benefits. Potential claimants can also file online at www.uiclaims.state.nm.us. Employees MUST have the following information to make a claim: Social Security Number; their employment history for the past 18 months — start date, end date, rate of pay, address and phone number of employer(s); and Social Security Number of dependents.

Initial claims take approximately 4 – 6 weeks to be cleared if a potential applicant is deemed eligible. Each individual claim is evaluated by the claimant work history to determine eligibility.

If an Eclipse employee has already filed via the Internet, Call Center, or in person they do not need to re-engage with the system — their claim is already being examined.
