Most analysts are pointing to the influence of religion when explaining the defeat of the domestic partnership bill by the state Senate. But a breakdown of the vote shows a clear regional division — specifically, the split among rural and urban Democrats in the New Mexico Senate.
Ten Democrats joined all Senate Republicans to defeat the bill. Sen. Pete Campos, D-Las Vegas, cited an onslaught of e-mails and phone calls in the final days. The influence of the religious right — including the Catholic Church here in New Mexico — may have been what spurred that onslaught, but the impact was felt overwhelmingly by rural Democrats:
