A potential takeover of the private College of Santa Fe by the state of New Mexico cleared another House committee yesterday and will now move to the House floor for a vote.
The vote was 13-4 in the House Appropriations and Finance Committee. The college has $35 million in debt and it faces closure if not bought out by the state. New Mexico Highlands University has taken some steps to take over the College of Santa Fe.
The bill would require more than a simple majority in both the House and Senate, reports the Santa Fe New Mexican.
The acquisition bill also was approved with an emergency clause, which would mean it would go into effect as soon as the governor signs it. The clause, though, requires two-thirds approval from the House and Senate.
SFReeper says students are “optimistic bur realistic.”
SFReeper also said the College of Santa Fe “as it currently exists will cease as of late-May when faculty and staff are let go for good. If Highlands, or another university, takes over that institution will have to rehire staff and faculty and will be forced to scramble over the summer to set up a fall semester.”
