Public transportation expanding in New Mexico

For the second time this week comes news that public transportation is expanding in central New Mexico. Earlier this week, the New Mexico Rail Runner Express announced on its Web site that it would expand its Saturday service, adding another mid-day train.

“One northbound train has been added in the morning and one southbound train has been added for the late morning and early afternoon,” the Web site reads.

Now, the Albuquerque Journal reports that Rapid Ride is expanding.

Rapid Ride is now going to a new area of Albuquerque: Central and Tramway:

“That’s requiring that we establish a third (Rapid Ride) route, which we are calling the ‘Green Line,’ ” Transit Director Greg Payne said Thursday. “So literally by summer, ABQ Ride passengers on Central Avenue will have the option of “Red” or “Green.’ ”

The “red” reference is to the service’s existing “Red Line” that runs on Central, but only as far east as Wyoming.

“We will be having three public meetings to talk to people about what they would like to see in this route,” said Payne in a statement. “What we do know is that the Green Line will improve our level of service, and I’m looking forward to seeing it up and running this summer.”

The meeting schedule is as follows:

  • Singing Arrow Community Center – 13001 Singing Arrow Ave. SE
    March 3, 2009 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
  • Highland Senior Center – 131 Monroe NE
    March 4, 2009 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
  • Alvarado Transportation Center – 100 1st Street SW
    March 5, 2009 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
