Open conference committees legislation passes N.M. House

The House, by a vote of 66-0, passed the legislation shortly after noon that would open legislative conference committees to the public.

Conference committees are closed-door meetings where legislators iron out key differences on competing versions of the same bill.

Similar legislation has failed in previous sessions because some state lawmakers have argued that if legislative meetings are opened then judicial and executive agency meetings should be opened as well.

The bill, sponsored by Rep. Joseph Cervantes, D-Las Cruces, now goes to the Senate, where it has not fared well in the past.
