This reflection on the Journal article IS the kind of education reporting, Ms. Dingmann, that we need. Thank you. I have found it so hard to take over the years that education reporting is NOT devoted to educating the public on the myriad of programs, issues, day in the life reports that our community needs in order to understand public schools. As in these lines to your article:

"As an APS parent and serious news consumer, I would rather see the Journal devote space to reporting and analysis of educational programs that work and of promising reforms and models of cooperation that enrich employees and students while cutting costs."

Why does good reporting have to be so hard to come by?

The Rio Grande Sun up north used to have the SIMPLEST column that gave so much information - it was Interview a Teacher and it simply asked a teacher a week from all over the Rio Arriba public schools the same 4 questions, I don't remember what they were now, but it would be easy as pie to think up some good ones like " What's happening in your classroom these days that you find that's different?" or, "What new program do you love and why?" or "Share a recent perk that happened to you out of the blue as a teacher." ( I just threw these out - I am sure much better ones could be devised with more thought)

We as a community would learn so much more with actual reporting rather than the shock and awe, "let's publish this story that will reinforce the stereotype of how folks view teachers."

this is a very old pet-peeve - bad education reporting. Ms. Dingmann, we need you!

Why does good reporting have to be so hard to come by?

The Rio Grande Sun up north used to have the SIMPLEST column that gave so much information – it was Interview a Teacher and it simply asked a teacher a week from all over the Rio Arriba public schools the same 4 questions, I don't remember what they were now, but it would be easy as pie to think up some good ones like ” What's happening in your classroom these days that you find that's different?” or, “What new program do you love and why?” or “Share a recent perk that happened to you out of the blue as a teacher.” ( I just threw these out – I am sure much better ones could be devised with more thought)

We as a community would learn so much more with actual reporting rather than the shock and awe, “let's publish this story that will reinforce the stereotype of how folks view teachers.”
