New Mexico’s unemployment rate rose to 5.1 percent in January according to the Associated Press. This is up from 4.7 percent in December and 3.1 percent in January of 2008.
New Mexico lost 8,600 jobs in the last year.
This is relatively low. While the official nationwide numbers won’t be released until tomorrow, some believe that it will be as high as eight percent.
There is one industry that is still hiring. “The state says government jobs increased by 2,200 over the year, most of them at the local level and many in tribal casinos,” the Associated Press wrote.
