Don’t buy the beer quite yet: McCain looks to postpone this Friday’s televised presidential debate

By | 09.24.08 | 2:30 pm

The New York Times is reporting that Republican presidential nominee John McCain is seeking to have his first TV face-off with Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama postponed.

Here’s the stated reason, according to the Times: “… so that [McCain] could return to Washington to try to forge a consensus on a financial bailout package.”

Astute politics on McCain’s part? Maybe. If he dashes to D.C. and can somehow hammer out a deal that can garner 60+ senators to support such a package, his bipartisan bona fides will most assuredly get polished. And just in time as the election campaign enters its final stages.

Then again, something tells me Harry Reid and company aren’t about to allow the GOP standard-bearer to save the day and get the credit.

As for the debate, many die-hard politics junkies – including this blogger – will be disappointed if it’s postponed, as many a Friday nigh plan have already been set.

Stay tuned for further developments.
