Death penalty repeal hurdles N.M. Senate committee — and now heads to a first-ever vote on the Senate floor

The Senate Judiciary Committee just voted 6-5 to repeal the death penalty.

That sends the legislation to its next-to-last stop — the Senate floor. Approval of the repeal on the Senate floor, as supporters expect, would send the bill to Gov. Bill Richardson for his signature.

Richardson has not said whether he will sign the legislation, but has said his opposition has softened over the past year.
