The state Senate passed legislation to abolish the death penalty minutes ago by a vote of 24-18.

Now Gov. Bill Richardson has to decide whether he will affix his signature. Richardson has said that he is unsure whether he will do, but he has acknowledged that his stance on the issue has softened a bit.

If he does sign the legislation, New Mexico would become the 15th state to repeal capital punishment.
