Albuquerque Journal science writer John Fleck highlighted a story from Bloomberg News about the downturn in the solar panel industry today.

Bloomberg writes, “Global supply of solar panels will exceed demand this year, keeping prices under pressure, as renewable energy investors struggle to fund plants and recession-struck households rein in spending, Commerzbank AG said.”

Fleck writes:

With three solar companies ramping up in Albuquerque, or at least trying to (Schott, Advent and Signet), the solar business is suddenly our business.

Bloomberg continues with the grim news on the solar panel industry.

“Solar stocks have plunged since October when credit conditions tightened, forcing solar-plant developers to cut equipment orders,” Bloomberg reports. They say while consumer demand in Germany will help mitigate some of the shortfall in industrial demand according to module makers and installation companies, “that may not be the case in the remainder of this year, Commerzbank said in a note to clients today.”
